About Dorval
Dorval, borough, Montreal region, southern province of Quebec, Canada, on Montreal Island (Île de Montréal). It is a southwestern suburb of the city of Montreal and is situated on Lac Saint-Louis, a spur of the St. Lawrence River. To the south offshore is Île Dorval, a summer resort. Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, located in Dorval, is a key international passenger airport. It was settled by the Sulpicians, a society of French priests who established a fort and mission at the site around 1670. They named the borough after Jean-Baptiste Bouchard (called Dorval), a French landowner.
Dorval enjoys a diverse economy, demonstrated by the different types of commercial and industrial businesses. The city's dominant attribute continues to be the Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International Airport, which gives Dorval a significant advantage in economic development. Over the years, the city has developed from an airport town and one-time residential suburb into a hub for more than 25,000 people commuting daily to work for the numerous companies strategically located in the industrial parks.
On January 1, 2002, Dorval was annexed into the City of Montreal as part of the 2002-2006 municipal restructuring and merged with L'Île-Dorval to form the Municipality of Dorval-L'Île-Dorval. After a change of government and a referendum in 2004, Dorval was again constituted as a city on January 1, 2006. Even though Dorval had the legal status of a city before the merger, the reconstituted city has the status of a municipality.
