    About Kirkland

Kirkland is a residential district on the island of Montreal in southwestern Québec, Canada.
The city of Kirkland is actually named after Charles-Aimé Kirkland, a Quebec provincial politician. It was established as a municipality in 1961. On January 1, 2002, it was included in the City of Montreal as part of municipal restructuring from 2002 to 2006 and became a city borough. Following a change in government and a referendum in 2004, however, it was restored as an autonomous municipality on January 1, 2006.
Kirkland is mainly a residential community with a central commercial core and an industrial area that stretches across the Trans-Canada Highway (Autoroute 40). In 1997, this segment of Autoroute 40 changed its name to Félix-Leclerc Highway. The city is composed mainly of single-family homes, with a few multi-family developments ( condominiums, townhomes, and apartments).
